Important Information
- The visa processing time is generally faster than in other France and Germany and can sometimes be completed on the same day as the appointment. However, for certain nationalities (e.g., Pakistan), it typically takes around 1 month.
- If your existing residence permit expires during the 3rd semester, you must apply for an Italian permit (permesso di soggiorno) upon arrival. This involves submitting a postal kit at a local post office and attending an appointment at the Questura.
- Non-EU students entering Italy with a French or German residence permit must submit a Declaration of Presence (Dichiarazione di Presenza) to the local police headquarters (Questura) within 8 days of arrival. This is required by Italian law and necessary to enrol at the University of Bologna and have access to exam registration. The Declaration requires a physical copy of your EU residence permit (from France or Germany), a valid passport, proof of enrollment at the University of Bologna, and details of Italian accommodation. A full list of the required documents is available here.
- Be aware that receiving the physical copy of your French or German permit may happen several months after the permit is granted, and the physical copy is required in order to submit the Declaration of Presence upon arrival in Italy. To avoid problems, it is important to collect your French or German residence permit(s) in person before departing to Italy.
